Lost Communication With Body Control Module (BCM)
Code U0140 indicates that modules on the vehicle CAN bus network have lost digital communication with the Body Control Module (BCM). Most commonly caused by a low or dead 12V battery, a blown BCM power fuse, water intrusion into the passenger floorboard/kick panel, or a loose harness connector.
Test battery voltage first—if under 12.0V, charge or replace the battery. Next, inspect the interior fuse panel for blown BCM power fuses. Check the passenger kick panel area for damp carpet caused by sunroof or windshield water leaks.

Live Scanner & Multimeter Benchmark Values
Compare your live OBD-II PID sensor data against OEM factory operating specs for U0140.
| Monitored Parameter / Sensor PID | Healthy OEM Operating Range | Fault Threshold (Triggers U0140) |
|---|---|---|
| Battery Resting Voltage | 12.4V – 12.8V DC | <11.9V causes BCM microprocessor brownout |
| CAN High / CAN Low Bus Resistance (Battery Disconnected) | 58 – 62 Ohms at DLC OBD2 Port (Pins 6 & 14) | 120 Ohms (missing termination resistor) or 0 Ohms (shorted bus) |

Step-by-Step Diagnostic & Repair Procedure
Follow this logical order to isolate and repair U0140 before spending money on costly parts.
Step 1: Battery Voltage Test
Check battery voltage with multimeter. Must be >12.4V with engine off.
Step 2: Inspect BCM Fuses
Test all BCM and Body fuses in both interior and under-hood fuse boxes.
Step 3: Inspect BCM for Moisture
Unplug BCM connectors. Look for blue/green corrosion on copper pins.
